“Between Petals & Unsent Letters” brings together a new body of work by Sedef Gali, expanding the artist’s ongoing exploration of memory, desire and emotional residue through layered painterly surfaces and translucent materiality. Moving between raw canvas, organza and suspended veils of pigment, the exhibition unfolds as a fragmented landscape of unsent letters, unfinished conversations and dissolving intimacies.

At the core of Gali’s practice lies an interest in what remains unresolved: emotions that resist closure, memories that continue to shift over time, and words that were never fully spoken. Embedded within the surfaces are fragments drawn from personal writings alongside excerpts from historical letters and literary correspondences — from Beethoven to Kafka — partially concealed beneath washes of pigment, oil paint and iridescent layers. These textual traces never fully reveal themselves; they emerge only momentarily before dissolving back into the surface, like words written on water.

Working primarily on unprimed raw cotton canvas, Gali allows pigment to seep directly into the material rather than sit on top of it. This absorption creates surfaces that feel at once intimate and unstable — compositions where gesture, stain and translucency remain in constant negotiation. Iridescent pigments and fluid washes shift with light and movement, causing certain elements to appear and disappear depending on the viewer’s position. The works resist fixity; they behave more like emotional atmospheres than static images.

The organza pieces extend this language into space. Layered transparencies create fleeting visual intersections in which image, text and light continuously overlap and dissolve into one another. Rather than presenting a singular narrative, the exhibition operates through accumulation, erosion and concealment — echoing the way memory itself is constructed: incomplete, unstable and perpetually rewritten.

Gali’s paintings do not offer definitive narratives; instead, they invite the viewer to move through the unstable nature of memory itself. Across the exhibition, surface becomes both archive and veil — a site where intimacy is simultaneously revealed and withheld.

In “Between Petals & Unsent Letters,” painting functions less as representation and more as a form of emotional preservation: a suspended space where longing, absence and memory continue to linger beyond language.
